The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyesky
After his great portrayal of a guilty man in Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky set out in The Idiot to portray a man of pure innocence. The twenty-six-year-old Prince Myshkin, following a stay of several years in a Swiss sanatorium, returns to Russia to collect an inheritance and “be among people.” Even before he reaches home he meets the dark Rogozhin, a rich merchant’s son whose obsession with the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna eventually draws all three of them into a tragic denouement. In Petersburg the prince finds himself a stranger in a society obsessed with money, power, and manipulation. Scandal escalates to murder as Dostoevsky traces the surprising effect of this “positively beautiful man” on the people around him, leading to a final scene that is one of the most powerful in all of world literature. Penguin Classics Limited Hardcover edition, Date published 2006, Illustrated by Ron Arad, ISBN 0-713-99965-9, 706 pages

A limited edition of 1000 copies of 5 seminal works was produced to celebrate 60 years of Pengiun Classics. Each edition was envisioned by a noted designer and produced with the greatest care. Arad's book has no cover so the reader will pick it up and read the author's first words. It is stripped back to show the glue and thread in the spine which is visible through an acrylic slipcase (with a lid) with a fresnel lens so the text appears to move as the lid is removed. Arad explains: "By not wanting to have a cover, it ended with the book becoming an amazing object that is alive, but which maintains its transparency. It became a glorious box with a book inside - almost like a monument." Search for other copies

Fine Book in Very Good slipcase. This is copy 844 of 1000 issued, still in shrinkwrap. The coverless text is intended to stay centered in the slipcase and is held in place by four small internal tabs. It appears that one of these tabs was not present in this particular copy, which allowed the book to slide up and down in the case which allowed the opposite tab to come loose. No affect on the case or the book, but the tab is loose and the book has vertical movement within the slipcase. Price reduced accordingly :-(.   As New $ 375.00 Add to cart
